Another winner by Florence Barclay. Don't get me wrong, though. In many ways she is quirky, and certainly dated, in her manner of portraying men and women, in the annoying - annoying!!! - way *all* of her h's refer to their beloveds as "Boy;" in the inevitable sermonettes one gets sprinkled throughout the stories. And in this book there is a bizarro quasi-paranormal scene which, frankly, did nothing for me or for the story.

But, her characters are well-drawn, and the stories have true depth to them. Her writing is a delight.

Ploughing through all of Barclay's available titles has been my post-Christmas Day spree, and it has been most enjoyable. Alas, tomorrow is Epiphany, and along with marking the end of Christmas, I will also be finishing up the next, and last, of Barclay's available Kindle books,

If you want classic, old-fashioned, well-told stories with some meat to them, and strong, traditional mores underwoven throughout, plus the delight of meeting a core of familiar characters throughout the entire series of novels [save for Following the Star], then you will adore Florence Barclay's works, and delight in having discovered a real treasure trove for your reading pleasure.

okay
A beautiful story, and also a good opportunity to learn about classical music. Read it, you will not be disappointed.
A romantic mystery! This is a love story from a bygone era. I love to read these kinds of books around Christmas time.
Lovely story, reminiscent of O'Henry's "Gift of the Magi."
This is another Christian Romance by Florence Barclay. It is a sweet story, however it has many unexpected occurrences. It was not my favorite of her works, but it is well written and I would recommend it to anyone.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Romance, villainy, superstition, and a touch of mystery culminate in a surprisingly touching Christmas story.
You have to suspend your common sense to believe that a wife could and would hide the existence of the couple's child from her selfish husband in order to save both him and her marriage, but if you can manage to deal with that mindset, and if you can imagine living in a house so big that would be possible, it's a sweet, romantic tale. Interesting to see the values of a bygone day. For me, it was sheer fantasy, set in the world of long ago. Don't expect it all to make sense by today's standards.
