The life story of Jesus of Nazareth, considered by billions of Christians to be the messiah prophesized in the Old Testament of the Bible, is perhaps the most famous in history. Described in detail in the New Testament, Jesus comes from both divine yet humble roots, born in a manger to a young woman, but in time he leads a fervent following as tales of his miracles spread across the Holy Land. Of course, a central aspect of Jesus's life is the situation in Israel and its ongoing conflict with Rome, which helped compel and inspire Jews to seek a savior that would deliver them from their enemies. The country is dismembered and hides religious renegades in the wilderness, waiting inside caves for the final battle against Rome. Apocalyptic effervescence has never been so intense in Israel as now. Jesus speaks in parables and enacts them, and they are understandable to the ears and eyes of a 1st century Jews. His words certainly don't talk about resignation or about future life in heaven, but about a plan, a program. His aphorisms don't command good behavior or spiritual contemplation, like the Buddha. They speak of judgment, first, and then the restoration of Israel, though perhaps not in the way that their listeners expect. He compares his movement with the mustard plant, this pernicious botanical species that the Latin naturalists describe as a destructive pest, since it invades agricultural land and attracts birds, thus destroying the crops. He compares the Kingdom of God with yeast, which remains hidden inside the bread until the decisive moment, when it can no longer be ignored. He speaks preferably to the lowest of the low, the nobodies the prostitutes, children, lepers and beggars, and he asks them to be ready, to watch and be alert for the signs.

Surprisingly good, informative book. If you want a short, concise book re: the historical context of Jesus and the beginnings of Christianity the May the book you've been looking for. It certainly would not be the end of your search, but it would be a good beginning, an overview if you will. The Historical Search... is well researched and documented, and well written. Much better researched, documented and written than other Charles River publications I have read. Given the above and the price, free, I don't see how one could go wrong. As I said, I did not read this book, but I DID read the description, and its reviews.
First---and this greatly annoys me---your information, from what I saw, is inaccurate (yes, I am a Christian, and I do read the Bible). Christ doesn't compare his movement to a mustard plant---He compares faith to a mustard SEED (faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains).
Also, He most definitely did NOT compare Christianity to yeast---He compared yeast to SIN (...ummm...).
Secondly, you didn't look hard enough. Jesus was only crucified on a Roman cross because the Pharisees hired false witnesses to testify against Him in front of Roman officials. He went from the Jewish officials to Pontius Pilate, then to King Herod, then back to Pilate. That day, it happened to be the Passover (the tradition for it is that one prisoner is traded for another). The crowd declared that they wanted Barabbas, a thief and murderer, to be set free.
Back to the point, Christ was falsely accused of blasphemy (which earned capital punishment in Jewish tradition [read Leviticus]), and crucified for it. Capital punishment, at the time, happened to be crucifixion.
Of course, I (just a thirteen-year-old boy with many faults) can only scratch the surface of the many layers of Biblical history. Read it for yourself, or listen to John MacArthur's sermons on it at gty.org.
I wish you magical rainbows (you probably wouldn't get this... or any of these), long bird lines, and umbrella face look-alikes.

Very interesting book and useful for the spiritual life
Any book about Jesus
Thankfully this isn't an attempt to prove the existence of Christ by a lliteral reading of the biblke, or prove that he was indeed what the Chrostian church celebrates him to be.
Just a straight up look at the evidence and a comparison of the 4 Gospels in an attempt to separate truth from legend andjustify that wiyth secular authors of teh era.
The book Jesus of Nazareth The Historical Search for the Christian Messiah describes Jesus's life from a historical perspective and uses non-biblical sources to demonstrate that he existed. Next the book explores the Gospels using textural archeology that Mark was the first gospel written and discusses the Q source. I found most interesting the discussion of the Gospels in the context of the society that Jesus lived in. The book describes Jesus's ministry during a time of great turmoil in the Jewish society under Roman rule, and how he was truly a revolutionary with a revolutionary message. The book lastly discusses the resurrection in the context that it must've happened because the "first century Jew had the necessary vocabulary to describe an exultation to heaven, a mythical experience, a hallucination, or an encounter with the spirit of a deceased person". This book will probably not make a person that believes the Bible is the inspired word of God that is completely true as is. I enjoyed the book and intend to read other writings by this author
There have been multiple opinions about Jesus' identity. Jesus died on a roman cross, meaning a political crime reserved for bandits, insurrectionists and revolutionaries. This book makes abundantly clear that we should reconsider the historical figure of Jesus, looking at the oldest strata in the New Testament, and although it doesn't take a position one way or another, it calls to the attention that the romans wouldn't have crucified a wisdom teacher who spoke of lilies in the field and birdies having enough to eat.
